The Unruly Pig

Suffolk, Bromeswell - Modern British / Italian - Pub - £££

Smart, art-filled roadside pub delivering serious 'Britalian' food

Overall Rating: Very Good

Uniqueness:Does the establishment stand out in the context of the local area? Very Good

Deliciousness:How delicious is the food? Very Good

Warmth:How warm is the service and the hospitality in general? Very Good

Strength of recommendation:How enthusiastically and widely would you recommend the establishment? Very Good

A roadside pub where superlative cooking, sharp service and stylish plates of food meet a dose of easy irreverence. The name’s a giveaway, as is the quirky decor and the art on the walls, starting with a bronze pig’s derrière behind the bar – now a regular talking point at this ‘well-established’ venue of high repute. Have fun here but eat and drink seriously too. Kick off with some oysters or a wild mushroom arancino, then proceed to the velvetiest of seasonal veloutés (perhaps Jerusalem artichoke with Taleggio). This is a broadly ‘Britalian’ kitchen, so pasta is made with silky finesse – perhaps ricotta gnudi with delica squash and brown-butter dressing or tubular paccheri with a rich venison ragù. Steaks often get the Italian treatment too: well-rested sirloin might be served ‘tagliata’ style with outrageously good Parmesan chips and deeply savoury bone-marrow sauce. The whole place is ‘expertly and enthusiastically run’, and tapping into the expertise of the well-led front-of-house team yields delicious rewards when it comes to the noteworthy European wine list.

Exciting pairings – flavours cleverly put together, creating dishes I’ve never tried before - or thought would marry up so perfectly. Obviously, a result of the use of excellent quality and fresh, seasonal ingredients. I love the fact that they use local produce wherever possible. And if you’re going to sit for a couple of hours enjoying your delicious meal, you’ll love the comfortable chairs. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the décor is cool and chic, with hip, interesting, eclectic artwork. But best of all are the friendly, welcoming staff from the moment you enter (you’re forgiven for thinking the friendly person who greeted you so warmly at the door was your waiter and not the ACTUAL owner, Brendan Padfield!) just when you think things can’t get any better, out pops Chef Patron. Perfect dining experience.
