The Grove Inn
Devon, Kings Nympton - Modern British - Pub - ££
The model of a good Devon local
‘When entering this pub you feel instantly at home – it wraps itself around you,’ commented one fan of this attractively solid, Grade II-listed thatched inn. The low-ceilinged, oak-beamed interior has a flagstone floor and a large open fireplace, with almost every inch of wall-space filled with ceramics, paintings and memorabilia. Robert and Deborah Smallbone have been here since 2003 and treat all their customers like old friends – an enthusiasm that inspires their ever-friendly team. The menu is best described as hearty Devon grub, with soft-yolked Scotch eggs (served warm from the fryer) and individual beef Wellingtons among the highlights. Elsewhere, pan-roasted Brixham hake with salsa verde and wild venison burgers with Taw Valley mature Cheddar are reminders that the county is rich in both seafood and game. A big choice of desserts rounds things off, from cider-poached pear to sea-salted treacle tart with lemon curd (both served with Devon clotted cream). ...

Wines are helpfully grouped by character, although the pub is known for its well-kept local beers and ciders – they also mix ‘a great glass of Pimm’s’.
