A centuries-old village pub atop a hill midway between Hadrian's Wall and the conurbations of Tyne & Wear, this ‘local hero’ continues to provide sustenance and a ‘consistently warm welcome’ for all-comers – with the added bonus of an in-house bakery (open Saturday mornings) and a summertime ‘pizza yard’ in front of the pub.  Inside, it looks the part with beams, log-burning stoves, well-kept Northumbrian ales and old-fashioned pub games, although the place has built its reputation on locally sourced seasonal food (check their 60-strong list of suppliers). The kitchen cures its own charcuterie, makes black pudding, and pickles North Sea herrings, as well as producing bespoke spirits. To drink, vermouth-based cocktails keep company with keenly priced, well-chosen wines.

The Feathers Inn is perched on a windy Northumberland hillside in a tiny village. We have been customers since it opened, at least 20 years. It just gets better and better every year, in the capable and creative hands of Rhian and Helen. From the outset, the food has always been locally sourced and perfectly cooked including meat from local farms and seafood from the north east coast, also Rhian forages for wild mushrooms and berries in the local area. Annual events such as the culinary quiz are highlights of our calendar, along with themed food events which we love. Although our kids are now grown up and working in London, they always long to come home so we all can head to the Feathers for a fantastic meal.
