The Alford Arms
Hertfordshire, Frithsden - Modern British - Pub - ££
Championing local produce and local virtues
This born-again Victorian hostelry is a thoroughly likeable proposition with plenty of box-ticking attributes – not least its glorious location on the fringes of Ashridge Estate (NT). Fans applaud the pub's tasteful farmhouse-chic interiors, hand-pulled Chiltern ales and savvy all-European wine list, although the venue’s trump cards are its unwavering commitment to local produce and its community spirit. After 27 years at the helm, long-serving hosts David and Becky Salisbury decided it was time to retire in August 2026 and handed over the reins. Thankfully, the new incumbents have retained all the staff and chef Jamie Celnik – so it’s business as usual. The pub’s famous bubble 'n' squeak with oak-smoked bacon, free-range poached egg and hollandaise still takes pride of place on the menu, but everything else changes every two weeks. Expect a rolling repertoire of appealing seasonal dishes ranging from chargrilled local Padrón peppers and confit duck...

Chatty, well-informed staff provide first-class service across the board. ‘Our go-to for celebrations and a post dog-walk pint,’ says one regular.
